The Center for Architecture’s Summer Education Programs are in full swing! We’re thrilled to welcome K-12 students from around New York City and beyond to explore and learn about the built environment with us. Already during the program’s first week, teens in our two-week Architectural Design Studio visited the Hunters Point Library by Steven Holl Architects as part of their research to create a concept design for a library, while our Building Bridges students took a trip on the Circle Line “Best of NYC” Cruise to explore the 30 bridges around Manhattan.

Summer Programs are designed to give curious kids the opportunity to dive into specific interests in architecture and test out their own ideas. Each one- or two-week program explores a different theme such as city design, public art, and subways, through art and building activities, design challenges, guided investigations of architectural examples, and site visits. Students begin each program by learning about the topic through discussions, presentations, and fun design challenges, then take trips and speak to guest experts on the topics they’re learning about. They develop drawings, collages, and sketch models throughout the week to help them think through their final designs. At the end of each week, students present their final projects—such as treehouses, moving bridges, and homes of the future—to friends and family, offering them the opportunity to share their design thinking and unique creations.

Over the course of the summer’s eight weeks, students and their families travel from across the U.S. and internationally to take part in our summer programs. We’re looking forward to meeting fresh faces this year in courses such as Subway Architecture and the Digital Design of Tiny Houses and on field trips to the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Spring Street Salt Shed, and architectural firms and artist studios, among other sites.

This summer, we are able to offer $25,000 in need-based scholarships thanks to funding from supporters of our Annual Education Fund and from attendees of our Guess-A-Sketch and Annual Golf Classic fundraisers. Grant support is also provided by public funds from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.

Programs are sold out for the season but watch our web site for waitlists and updates on fall programming!
