Strips

Strips may comprise some or all the uses of the other typologies. Sometimes these agglomerations were built piecemeal, while in some instances they were built as a part of a larger development—the retail base for housing towers, for example. The urban interest they create is less a result of their simple architecture than of the views they open up of surrounding buildings, streets, and the sky. Their horizontality makes strips a relative novelty in Manhattan.
