Churches

In terms of architectural expression, the most diverse group of single-story buildings are houses of worship, including churches in historical styles, Brutalist structures, and converted storefront chapels. Many of these places reflect different waves of immigrant populations who came to inhabit the East Village and the Lower East Side. As gentrification spreads, congregations remain as reminders of the communities and cultures that have shaped these neighborhoods over time.
