The Design + Practice Exchange (DPE) is a one-and-a-half-day symposium of compelling conversations and design presentations centering the voices of women in architecture, co-hosted by the AIANY Women in Architecture Committee and the Boston Society for Architecture Women in Design. This year’s theme is “Navigating the (Post) Pandemic Design Terrain.”

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the design field dramatically. From workplace wellness and economics to shifting design criteria, our practices have been directly impacted by the pandemic, forcing us to adapt in unprecedented ways. The DPE will reflect on lessons learned from the pandemic and explore ideas for more equitable, resilient, and socially and environmentally sustainable practices.

Day 1 will feature a keynote presentation, a design panel, and a conversation on the theme, followed by an afternoon of roundtable discussions focusing on four topics: Design & Leadership, Workplace Culture, Professional Practice & Development, and Advocacy and Activism.

On Day 2, the DPE will host a walking tour celebrating women’s contributions to the built environment by highlighting some of the most notable women-designed structures in New York City.

The goal of the DPE is to advance and promote women leaders of all racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds in architecture and the allied design and building industries. The event is open to people of all gender identities.
