At times impatient with the pace of industrial innovation in producing smart, low-carbon, responsive building products and systems, designers are now jumping into the arena with do-it-yourself research and development approaches. Through a range of interdisciplinary strategies that reach into biology and computation, some are experimenting with smart buildings, renewable materials, and self-regulating systems. Others are beginning to design new structures with their future adaptive re-use in mind, examining opportunities for components to be designed with second and third lives in mind.

What many of these strategies share is a renewed focus on the specific elements from which buildings are made, deployable as stand-alone structures or as parts of larger architectural, urban, or infrastructural projects. Join the AIANY Global Dialogues Committee as we meet designers pushing the boundaries of design in pursuit of far-reaching sustainable goals.
