The Center for Architecture Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the 2013 CFA Design Scholarship, and the Women’s Auxiliary Eleanor Allwork Scholarship. For both awards, students are nominated by the dean or department chair of their respective school. With a record number of applications, this year’s field proved extremely competitive. Ultimately the scholarship committee selected four outstanding students: Hyatt Tortorella, CFA Design Scholarship; Anthony Giron, Jenna Steinbeck and David Martinez-Delgado, Eleanor Allwork Scholarship.
The CFA Design Scholarship is given on the basis of merit to a student currently enrolled in architecture, engineering, or a related design discipline at an accredited institution within New York State. Hyatt Tortorella, who will enter her fifth year of the B. Arch program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the fall, was selected based upon her outstanding portfolio submission, which included an adaptation of Aalto’s Villa Mairea, and a geothermal interjection along the waterfront in Troy, NY.
The Eleanor Allwork Scholarship was established by architect Ronald R. Allwork, and is awarded to a student pursuing his/her first degree in architecture at an accredited institution within New York State. This year’s recipients – Andrew Giron, Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York, and David Martinez-Delgado, Pratt School of Architecture, both pursuing undergraduate degrees, and Jenna Steinbeck an M. Arch student at Pratt – all submitted work with a holistic approach to the field of architecture and a keen understanding of urban environs.
For the second year in a row, Fresh Meat, a publication of the University of Illinois Chicago, received the Haskell Award for Student Journals. Named in honor of the late Douglas Putnam Haskell, architecture critic at The Nation and later editor of Architectural Forum, the award is given annually to a student publication in an effort to foster intelligent criticism within the field of architecture. While not a practicing architect himself, Haskell became an honorary member of the AIA and was later nominated to the College of Fellows. Fresh Meat, the official student publication of IUC seeks to promote and curate conversations that “explore the role of architecture in today’s world.”
The Center for Architecture Foundation awards six grants and scholarships throughout the year for architecture students, practicing architects, and architectural student journals. Recently, Diana Agrest, a 2004 recipient of the Arnold V. Brunner Grant, held a private screening of her recently completed film, “The Making of an Avant-Garde: the IAUS 1967-1984,” at the Museum of Modern Art. The film was funded in part by the Center for Architecture Foundation and AIANY.
The next upcoming grant is the LeBrun Travel Award founded to further the personal and professional development of an architect in early- or mid-career through travel. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and a practitioner in the field –licensed or unlicensed. The application deadline is Friday 11.01.13 by 5:00 PM EST. Check out our website for more information here.
