Join the AIANY Science and Research Facilities Committee for a panel discussion on the recent renovation and expansion of Rockefeller University.

Rockefeller University is in the process of adding two acres to their 14-acre campus along the East River by extending the campus over the FDR Drive. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation – David Rockefeller River Campus project will include new buildings with state-of-the-art laboratories, as well as dining commons, an academic center, and a conference center.

In addition to the new campus construction above FDR Drive, the University will undertake the complete renovation and enhancement of the East River Esplanade from just south of E. 64th Street to the centerline of E. 68th Street. The design will enhance the experience of esplanade users by providing a clearly defined pedestrian and bike path, as well as landscaping that increases the number of trees, plantings, and opportunities for seating.

Recently, Rockefeller University also completed the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) which renovated two existing laboratory buildings and added a new bridging connector building, along with major additions to the landscaped areas on the northern half of the campus. The CRC has returned the north half of the campus to the vital scientific research hub it was designed to be nearly a century ago.

By completely renovating and reconfiguring Flexner Hall, built in 1917 and Smith Hall, built in 1930, the university replaced about one third of their existing laboratory space with new state-of-the-art facilities and retained two beloved historic buildings. The addition of the bridging building provides formal and informal meeting spaces that support scientific work.

The panel will discuss how to implement designs and utilize innovative construction techniques that facilitate interaction amongst researchers and create a unique campus setting.
