Written agreements on a construction project, whether an AIA form document or otherwise, and a good, productive relationship with the owner during the negotiation of the agreement are critical to a project’s success. The content of the agreement and the negotiation process provide opportunities for design professionals to set the relationship with owners on a firm and productive course. Design professionals can take advantage of these opportunities, but only if they have a full appreciation of what is necessary for the agreement.
