Language of Architecture

Designed for students in grades K-6, this packet includes suggested activities, worksheets, and lessons to learn about different types of buildings as well as the significance of their individual parts. Students can practice “reading” buildings for clues about their design and function as they observe and think about simple architectural elements.

Skyscrapers

Designed for students in grades K-12, this packet includes suggested activities, worksheets, and lessons to learn about the structure of skyscrapers. Students can explore the structural systems that support tall buildings and test their ideas with various design challenges.

Building Bridges

Designed for students in grades 2-12, this packet includes suggested activities, worksheets, and lessons to learn about the structure of bridges. Students can investigate the design of four different bridge types (beam, arch, truss, and suspension) to learn how each works to support the load of traffic and span long distances.

Green Architecture

Designed for students in grades 3-12, this packet includes suggested activities, worksheets, and lessons to learn about sustainable design in the built environment. Students can learn about a variety of sustainable design techniques used to create environmentally friendly buildings.

Neighborhood Design

Designed for students in grades 5-12, this packet includes suggested activities, worksheets, and lessons to learn about the challenges of urban planning. Students can consider the factors that affect the success and growth of neighborhoods and cities while practicing volumetric calculations.

Scale Model Building

Designed for students in grades 6-12, this packet includes suggested activities, worksheets, and lessons to learn about 2-D architectural notation and 3-D models. Students can explore how mathematical concepts are used to create measured drawings and models throughout the design process.

Geodesic Domes

Designed for students in grades 5-12, this packet includes suggested activities, worksheets, and lessons to learn about geodesic domes. This elegant structural form, made famous by engineer and inventor Buckminster Fuller, offers a unique opportunity to experience real-life applications of structures, geometry, and physics.
